Most of the free pianos out there sound/play pretty junky. When they're that much of a PITA compared to guitar of course they don't stand a chance versus TV and Xbox and internet. $25k seems to be where they start getting decent and you have to dedicate a whole room! Tone & action improve only with going to bigger pianos that are louder and more expensive. They're super loud, hard to control the volume on them. Even stuff like my teacher's piano that had active humidification control inside it, it was never once in tune perfectly the entire time I went to lessons and it was super obvious all the time. There's an entire culture of piano players basically tolerating the piano being out of tune between tunings. I'd say 99% of the time I ever played on a real piano it was out of tune to a degree I would never EVER tolerate my guitar being that out of tune. Lots of US pianos approach or exceed the cost of a house in many parts of the US. Lots of money, very very strong motivation to get a digital keyboard. A lot of people still value it but the bar is so incredibly high today.Ī new Chinese piano is in the $5000-10,000 range IIRC. even versus guitar it's super easy to see why piano has a hard time growing & keeping people's interest. You don't want the stings moving sideways under the damper because it could damage the delicate damper felt.ĭigital Pianos - Electronic Pianos - Synths &a. ![]() Always make sure to press the key on the note you are checking (or depress the damper pedal), so the dampers are up when placing the mute between the strings. There are also some caveats when using the mutes. So, you would also need to purchase a rubber or felt mute to mute off the other strings when checking the pitch of a single string. If tuning, you tune one string of a bi-chord or trichord and then tune the other string(s) to the one that is tuned at the correct pitch. You always measure one string at a time, regardless of whether you are tuning or just checking. ![]() Any tuning app is not going to properly measure an out of tune unison. Are any of the professional tuning apps able to tell if a unison is out? Or is the goal with them to tune one string of a unison to pitch and then tune the others by ear? Of course, the tuning apps are useful in calculating stretch, inharmonicity, etc. It sounds like you might be, at least partially, talking about out-of-tune unisons. There is also a new app just released called "Pianoscope" and there has been a Beta trial of this on the technicians forum here - these three options are I think probably the best candidates to look at. Pianometer is my current favourite and can be purchased quite cheaply if you aren't a professional tuner and only want it for a single piano. The trial verson of Tunelab Pro has been mentioned but it is expensive to purchase fully. That said there is no perfect stretch with different piano tuners and different tuning applications calculating the optimal stretch differently, especially as it is not a universal stretch and has to be individually determined for a particular piano, so it is not easy. cannot be used (except for that one A440 note) and you must use a full blown piano tuning app that understands stretch to actually check notes. That means that a simple tuning display such as are used for guitars etc. ![]() On a piano the other notes are never a perfect mathematical progression from that fundamental note but are 'stretched' to a compromise required due to a pianos inharmonicity. There isn't going to be a simple app/meter because only one note will be at A440 (or whatever offset from that it has been tuned to).
